Every year, on the 25th of April, Portugal dresses in red carnations to celebrate one of the most important days in its modern history — the Dia da Liberdade (Freedom Day). It marks the peaceful revolution in 1974, that celebrated half century last year, and that ended decades of dictatorship and restored democracy to the country.
What makes this day so unique is not only the political change it brought, but the way it unfolded — almost without violence, and with the powerful symbol of carnations placed in the barrels of soldiers' guns. It became known as the Carnation Revolution, a name that continues to inspire generations.
On this day, the country pauses to remember the values of freedom, democracy, and hope. Streets fill with music, speeches, and parades, and many families take the opportunity to reflect on the importance of living in a free and open society, the free speech and the right to make choices.

Todos os anos, no dia 25 de Abril, Portugal veste-se de cravos vermelhos para celebrar um dos momentos mais marcantes da sua história recente — o Dia da Liberdade. Comemora-se a revolução pacífica de 1974, que contou meio século no ano passado, e que pôs fim a décadas de ditadura e devolveu a democracia ao país.
O que torna este dia tão especial não é apenas a mudança política que trouxe, mas a forma como tudo aconteceu — praticamente sem violência, com o poderoso símbolo dos cravos colocados nos canos das espingardas dos soldados. Foi por isso apelidada de Revolução dos Cravos, um nome que continua a inspirar gerações.
